Helping you understand your smartpower electricity monitor
We’re very pleased to introduce the smartpower electricity monitor, a handy little gadget that can help you manage and control your electricity consumption. It is part of ‘smartpower’, the name we’re giving to our programme to try to help all our customers get the most out of smart metering over the coming years.
We're currently in the process of updating our short online video guides to understanding your monitor with extra content and useful information, we're sorry they are currently unavailable.
So, what can your energy monitor do?
Well, at a glance your monitor will help you see almost instantly, via the real time display, the effect of turning a home appliance on and off. You can keep an eye of how much you’re using from one day to the next and set daily targets for how much energy you’d like to be using.
See our quick guide to the monitor’s features below

So now you know your way around your monitor why not find out how you can challenge your home to help save energy!
Challenge your home
Your monitor really is a clever bit of kit but it’s not just about watching the dials jump up and down, your monitor really can help you take control and save energy in your home!
Here’s an idea to help you work out your electricity usage. Take the monitor around the house and as you switch each appliance on, make a note of how of how much it uses. Why not download our handy energy forms to help you do this.
Next, try turning everything off; see how low you can get the speedometer. Is everything off that should be? What’s the effect of switching an appliance off that you would normally leave on standby? Like the computer monitor maybe or perhaps you’ve left a mobile phone charger plugged in but not attached to a phone?
Remember you’ll never get the dial to zero as there are some appliances you can’t switch off and will always be using energy, such as the kitchen fridge. But is there anything you can use less of each day to try and meet your target?
Get the family involved
It’s no good if only one person in the home uses the monitor – to get the best out of it why not get the whole family involved. What about creating a game with the kids to see how much energy they can save around the home.
